Everett's Bluegill Fly

This is a great fly simple and fast to tie and they work.

Materials:

Hook size 10

 1/8 Brass bead

Thread UTC 70 Black

Medium Black Chenille

Rubber Legs 3-4

 

 

 

 

 

1. Place bead on hook and secure in vise. 

 2. Start thread and work to the back.

 3. Remove some of the end of the chenille to expose the thread core.

 4. Tie in and move thread about half way up.

 5. Wrap chenille up to thread and tie off.

 6. Take the rubber legs and fold over under hook to double amount.

 7. Tie in securely and move thread to bead.

 8. Wrap the chenille in front of legs to the bead.

 9. Whip finish and trim chenille and thread.

10. Trim legs to desired length and enjoy.

My Variation

 

 

The original is a great pattern but just like everything this too can be made more complex. So I did. It uses a different hook style and I have added a tail.

 

Materials

Hook Size 10-12

1/8 brass bead

Thread UTC 70 black

Tail Chartreuse Marabou or Rabbit fur

Black Chenille

Chartreuse and black speckled legs.

 

 

 

1. Place bead on hook and secure in vise. 

 2. Wrap thread to just around the bend.

 3. Tie on some tail fibers.

 4. Trim

 5. Fray the end of the chenille to expose the thread core.

 6. Tie in the chenille.

 7. Move thread up about 2/3 and tie in 4 rubber legs. Make sure they are facing forwards.

 8. Start wrapping the chenille up to the back of the legs.

 9. Pull the legs back and wrap 2-3 times in front.

10. Whip finish and trim the legs.

11. You can see how the legs spread out into a fan shape.

This pattern just kind of happened. Panfish around here love the color orange, rubber legs and flash so this is what I put together. I am glad I did this little fly has saved the day more time than I can count and is always in my boxes.

 

Materials

Hook size 10

1/8 brass bead

Thread 8/0 Orange

Rainbow flash

Purple rubber legs

Orange dubbing

 

 

 

 

 1. Place bead on hook and secure in vise.

 2. Start thread and wrap to the back.

 3. Tie on tail.

 4. Move thread up about 2/3.

 5. Tie on two rubber legs.

 6. Criss-cross pattern tight.

 7. Move thread back to the tail.

 8 Start dubbing the body.

 9. Gradually getting wider.

 10. Criss- crodd the dubbing over leg tie in poin a few times.

 11. Dub the front section.

 12. Trim legs

13. A dubbing need is very handy when separating legs. 

14. Whip finish and Enjoy.

I seen this pattern several years ago somewhere; it said great fly for stocked fish.  I thought about it and tied up a few and boy does it work good. It is suppose to resemble the pellets they are fed while being raised.

Materials

Hook size 10

Brass Bead 1/8

Thread UTC 70 olive

Lead wire .015

Chenille Medium olive with tinsel in it

 

 

 

 1. Place bead on hook and secure in vise.

 2.Wrap about a dozen turns of lead wire and push up into the bead.

 3. start the thread and wrap back to hook point.

 4. Fray the end of the chenille to expose the thread core.

 5. Tie in and work thread back to front.

 6. Wrap the chenille up to bead and then back half way, then back to bead. You want a roundish shape.

7. Whip finish and glue and Enjoy.

You can tie this pattern much bigger also for different fish. I use anywhere from a 6-1/0 for bass and northern pike.

 

Materials

Hook 3XL Sz 10

UTC 140 Fl. Pink

1/8 brass dumbbell

Bucktail white and Chartreuse

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

1. Secure hook in vise.

2. Tie on eyes. Lay down about three layers of thread for body.

3. Tie on white bucktail about 1.5-2x shank length.

4. Trim ends.

5. Rotate vise or flip hook over.

6. Tie in chartreuse bucktail and trim.

7. A flame and a hot needle will clean the head area up easily.

8. Add cement and
